protest songs in warner music research
Green Day - American Idiot
The title track of Green Day’s 2004 album was originally written as a response to US President George W Bush and the war in Iraq that came out of the September 11 attacks. it has a lot of sarcastic remarks and the song expresses their attitudes to certain political and social issues. But interest in the song has seen a resurgence following the election of Donald Trump and has begun to climb the UK charts in the run up to the President’s visit to the country in July 2018.
M.I.A. - Paper Planes
Maya Arulpragasam is the daughter of a Sri Lankan Tamil activist, so she is in a good position to appreciate the daily struggles of immigrants and refugees who hail from areas of conflict. Paper Planes is her “underdog” song, giving an idea of how a refugee would adapt to living in a capitalist country like the US. This is a song that features verses in which M.I.A. raps unapologetically about evading border police and manufacturing fake visas.
